Publications and Intellectual Property

Users of the CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research (CLEAR) are encouraged to publish the results of their experiments, following good scientific practice and applicable CERN policies.

Publications and authorship

Publications resulting from experiments performed at CLEAR should:

  • Acknowledge the CLEAR facility. In accordance with CERN Operational Circular No. 6, the publication must clearly mention the CERN experimental facility used for the work. The following acknowledgement is recommended: This work was performed at the CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research (CLEAR). The authors acknowledge the CLEAR team for their support.
  • Consider CLEAR personnel for co-authorship when they have made substantial scientific or technical contributions to the work. This may include beam development and optimisation, experimental design, measurements, data analysis or interpretation.
  • Discuss authorship with the CLEAR team before submission, and allow CLEAR personnel contributing as authors to review the manuscript.
  • Inform the CLEAR team of publications resulting from experiments performed at the facility, providing a reference or link to the publication.
Intellectual property

Intellectual property arising from experiments at CLEAR is governed by CERN’s External Use of CERN Research Facilities terms and conditions, unless superseded by a specific agreement between CERN and the user’s institution.
Under Section 4 of these terms, intellectual property resulting from the external researchers’ use of the facility is vested in their institution, which grants CERN a free, non-exclusive licence for its use in CERN’s scientific programme.
Users considering patent applications or commercial exploitation of results obtained at CLEAR should consult their institution’s intellectual property office before public disclosure. Cases involving joint developments with CERN personnel should be discussed with CERN Knowledge Transfer.
